Newstand Alert: Women's Running

My Women's Running cover with US Softball legend Jennie Finch hits the stands today! I shot this 50th Anniversary Issue cover late last year, a few days before the ING NYC Marathon that she was running in.  It's a nice glimpse into some of the fitness lifestyle type of work that I sometimes do that I don't have a section for on my website. Check it out:

Fran Lebowitz for BUST

I love Fran. She's quite legendary and iconic. Her candor and personality keeps one in stitches. In between the conversations she smoked, we laughed, we spoke of her new documentary with Martin Scorsese and I did her makeup...just another shoot day...

Carousel de Beaute...

Sometimes you just have to say yes when a booker sends you a girl as special as Kristina K. You know that the opportunity to shoot them again is going to be slim, more likely ebbing on the side of none. At 16, she's already shot for Japanese Vogue and Calvin Klein. A week after we had the opportunity to shoot her, her agency made her Conde Nast exclusive...

Kristina K.'s agency polaroids

We knew going into it that we wouldn't have enough time to shoot her for hours on end but fun could be had nonetheless...We spent a few hours together and had a bit of playtime before she had to run off to have a casting with superstylist Katie Grand.

Kristina donning pailletes

and other girlie accoutrements...

Check out the story Carousel de Beaute featuuring Kristina in the March 2010 issue of Boho Magazine:

I'll update with these images on my website soon, but for now, peep some behind the scenes coverage...

Newstand Alert

Brides Magazine Nov./Dec. 2009 issue. I have the beauty story in the back of the magazine: A lovely 6 page spread on translating the newest bridal trends in makeup. I shot this one a while back, but am only able to share it now. The nail biting can now stop since its currently on newstands. Below is an excerpt from a fragrance story that I did for the same issue...

The entire beauty editorial "From Runway to Your Day" can be seen in its entirety on my website.

Extra, Extra! Newsstand Alert!!!

Essence magazine October 2009 issue. Mary J. Blige graces the October cover. My work graces page 44: Beauty Strands hair story. A quick little one page story where I did the makeup and Dana Gibbs did the hair (I also did the "At What Cost" Video with her). The 'bob' hairstyle is featured 5 different ways and makeup was matched accordingly. Remember our model Adaora? Well here she is....

Dujour Mag, the Vintage Issue Continues...

Here is Taylor.... She's from SoCal....Well, actually for the purposes of this shoot, she's from the 1960's....

...She's our model who will be wearing all sorts of vintage yumminess in an editorial fashion spread for DuJour Magazine's Vintage Issue. Dujour makes me think of pink, and glitter, and curly-q cursive; girl-ishous-ness in every way:   Tutu's, tea parties, cupcakes and satin...Oh, and let us not forget pink as in lipstick, which she will be sporting a lot of. Taylor was the perfect modern day Brigitte Bardot.  Have a looksee....

DuJour Magazine, the Vintage Issue

Sarah

Lisa Porter

...How cute is it that Sarah and Lisa still have their velcro rollers in?? This was a spur of the moment super last minute fashion shoot for the vintage issue of DuJour magazine...no explanation needed on why the makeups have a vintage feel to it...And honestly, does one really need a reason for cool winged black liquid eyeliner and eyelashes??? I thought not! After all, just a few decades ago, women went out dressed to the nines with hats, gloves and makeup to match...Lovelies, this issue will be out soon filled to the brim with vintage goodness, do you have your subscription yet???

In a Blank Space...

All of the pre-production and prep came down to this. Today was shoot day. We shot in a beautiful, airy and open stark white loft studio. Today was all about the trouser: Wide leg, cropped, ankle length, harem fluidly moving ones. Linen ones, silk jersey ones...A plethora of pants pants pants (and fabulous accessories to coordinate)!!! Our model, Karolina from FORD was a real pro and goodness could this girl move (yet another reason she was cast!) Not only did she have a strong book, and the rest of the specific criteria that we were looking for, but she also had amazing close cut, short hair!!!! (To be honest, we knew she was our girl the second she left the casting). The cool and laid back vibe of the day was foreshadowed when she came skipping across Hudson Street a bundle full of energy at 08:40.

We had 9 different shots to do, so, after Allison the clothing stylist finalized the looks, Hikari the hairstylist and I decided to change up the hair and makeup every third look. The hair went from softly sculpted and girlie, to kind of modern- spiky-messy (don't dare call it punk) and ended in a lovely modern slick, slightly 20's inspired style. I took the makeup from soft in the earlier shots and gradually intensified it as we progressed. It was definitely about a slightly stronger eye created with a sooty antique gold (more of a brassy undertone as opposed to a yellow)loose shadow, soft velvety skin, a sherbet colored sheer lip stain and a face sculpted with Shu Uemura Luring Powder (gosh do I love that stuff). In the later looks I added lower lashes to add to the drama and a flesh colored kajal pencil to enhance the wide eyed look...You can see a bit of the progression via some select, yet crude behind the scenes photos:

Come on in and have a seat...

Just one of the many pairs of accessories that I drooled over throughout the day; These Giuseppe Zanotti shoes (above) were amazing, and according to the model, also surprisingly comfy!

Hello lower lashes....

Above: Karolina in random behind-the-scenes shots...

Wrap it, ship it, Platinum...Day is done at 15:53 . We wrapped 1 hour and 6 minutes ahead of schedule.

I think this is one of my favorite fashion shoots that I've done in a long time....It's definitely different than any of the current work that I have. I'm happy to have explored with the team and come up with something different, ethereal, pure and dreamy...I can't wait to see the final edits in glossy form! Once again, kudos to the entire team for a job well done! I'll update with tears when I have them!

xx!

"News Flash" Fall Fashion Story Featuring Emma Beam

Check out my latest spread in the September 2008 issue of Florida International Magazine. It's pretty cool, graphic and predominantly black and white. I did several makeup changes throughout the story sticking mainly to black, white, silver, grays and fleshy neutrals. I even had time to play with those limited edition Viktor & Rolf eyelashes from Shu Uemura. You can check out a behind the scenes video of the entire crew and the making of the shoot (video shot by Jason Koontz) here:

and take a look at some of the final picks the magazine chose below.....Enjoy!

Bombay the Hard Way, Resurrected....

It's so surprising what treasures the internet holds: To preface, in all professional honesty, I probably should have started blogging months ago...It was an idea first kicked around several months ago at the Air India terminal at JFK with my stylist friend Jersey.

My parents (gotta love mom and dad) dropped me to JFK for what was to be a 10 day work/job trip in Mumbai, India and I told them that I would keep in touch etc. via daily computer updates etc....(mind you, this was all before I knew that Wi-Fi and internet service is SOOOOO not what it is here....neither are toilets, showers, electricity, and taxi's to name a few but that's another blog altogether)

Ankywhoo, our assignment was to shoot ex-model turned #2 Bollywood star Bipasha Basu for Nirvana Woman magazine as not only was it their 'First Annual Bollywood Issue' but it was the launch of the publication in India. What better way to launch it but with Bips, shot with an all international crew!!

Being the seasoned traveler that I am, I normally would have done due diligence in preparations for this trip via Google, but being that I only had 2 days prep time before my departure, the trivial things such as picking up a guidebook and reading some web blogs and just doing some general research got pushed to the side in favor of things like: digging out summer clothes, getting a visa, conquering my luggage and kit dilemmas and filling scripts for malaria and other possible ailments.

I have decided to spare the gory details, in part because I don't want to relive the first 3 days and the pre-production nightmares, but also, to protect the names of the innocent and the not so innocent....I would also like to add, that this trip was made 1000 times easier as the crew was comprised of some of my closest friends.

I will however, say that the shoot day, while tense, (extra fast paced; 5 hours max from prep, clothing changes, to wrap. This folks, mind you, is a generous time frame for a celeb) went off according to plan. Beautiful location (The Taj Land's End), beautiful clothes and jewelry (western and european designers), beautiful talent (Bipasha's gorgeous in case you didn't know, ex model turned actress) and of course a super talented team (ahem, me being included in that). The story was an 8 page fashion spread plus cover. See below for final results:

I am also linking to our Zoom TV television interview. It took me from March when I returned, until now to find it and let me just say, that I am happy that you see only a flash of my turquoise tunic and my hand in the very beginning, as I was a humid, sweaty, jet lagged mess on that day. I am thankful that the folks at the network cut out my on camera interview. Bipasha looks flawless and camera ready as she should. Me on the other hand, let's just say, I could blackmail myself with the visual.... href="http://www.zoomtv.in/view/news/bips-international-cover-girl-0

Special super duper kudos and Thanks goes out to Arunesh...and he knows why!!

Enjoy!!!
