The Nude vs. Red debate

It's that time of year again: No, not just the Holiday Season, but the time of year where most women debate what to wear on their lips for this festive time of year. Some of you will try a real commitment to red for the first time (and I hope that you do) and some of you will feel more comfortable with a nuder pout. For those of you who are trying red, I believe in fully going there so I've only addressed my favorite full on reds here. Wherever you may happen to fall in either spectrum see some of my favorite recommendations for both below:

1.)  YSL Rouge Volupte´ Red Taboo Lipstick  $34.00  2.)  T. Leclerc Royal #16  $24.00 3.)  NARS Jungle Red Semi Matte Lipstick $24.00  4.)  NARS Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil $24.00   5.)  Tom Ford Scarlet Rouge Lip Color $48.00  6.)  NARS Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil $24.00

And for those of you who prefer to keep your lips more bare, here are some of my favorite nude lipsticks & glosses:

If you are able to get your hands on #1.) Estee Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting lipstick in Vanilla Truffle $24.00, please do so. It's a beautiful universal nude that looks good on a wide range of skin tones from super fair to deeper olive complexions (because of its lack of pink). It''s limited edition so consider yourself lucky if you can track this one down.  2.)  NARS Satin Lipstick in Honolulu Honey $24.00  For the very pale amongst you, try 3.)  YSL Rouge Volupte Sensual Silk 002 $34.00 It's a light pinky nude. I recommend applying this super creamy lipstick with a lip brush so that the ante is upped on the staying power 4.) A fave for a full on opaque nude mouth (but of course) is Tom Ford  Beauty Lip Color in Blush Nude $48.00  5.)  Dior Rouge Dior in Angelique Beige #314 $32.00    6.)  NARS Lip Lacquer in Chelsea Girls $24.00 7.) NARS Lip Gloss in Sandpiper $24.00 Loving this light apricot nude gloss for all skin tones but especially medium to darker skin tones. It has just the right hint of color to give you that nude pout.

Hopefully some of my faves become some of yours. Let me know your thoughts and how you make out if you do decide to change it up a bit. Happy Holidays!

Shop Talk: L'Occitane Fresh Face Water

Lately, I'm really liking this Fresh Face Water makeup remover/ toner from L'Occitane to use to start off my makeups. Though I go back and forth on using astringents and toners (hey, each skin is different) I'm definitely digging this one. In general, I like multi-use products because it helps me cut down on the amount of things that I need to carry and helps me to preserve the very prized real estate in my makeup kit. I spritz this on to freshen up and tone skin and (instead of a wipe), to remove any makeup residue or dirt that may be there. I then follow with the remainder of my skin prep routine.  I also like that Fresh Face Water is alcohol free and that it contains moisturizing Shea Butter extract.

LA IMATS 2011

The LA IMATS were held this past weekend in Pasadena California. It's a predecessor of the Makeup Show (started in 1997) back when the industry, the technology, the players and the offerings were much different. It has since evolved in a great way and fellow blogger at MakeuptoGo and working pro makeup artist Tania Russel was there and gave a great rundown that needs to be shared here:
The International Makeup Artist Trade Show – the second of the two major LA-based makeup trade shows – took place this past weekend. This was the first year in IMATS’s history that the Los Angeles show completely sold out (IMATS originated in LA back in 1997). In fact, we here at Makeup to Go almost missed this show entirely. As a pro makeup artist (and same with my en EspaƱol partner, Delia Jimenez Owens) I do not always know whether or not my schedule is going to be open to attend the trade shows. By the time I got my schedule sorted, I missed a lot of cool new features for Professional Artists that IMATS instituted for this years show AND regular admissions tickets were almost sold out. As it turned out, I was able to get tickets for the MTG crew for Sunday and we were able to attend the show for the day. So here’s a wrap-up of what I saw and what I bought…
Actually, let’s back up a bit: This year’s show actually started Friday night with a Pro Only preview event with the vendors. A Pro Only preview is something I have advocated for all the Trade Shows for the past several years. Nothing against makeup fans attending the shows, but it is difficult for pros to talk to vendors about new products/formulations/etc. when you are waiting behind someone asking what shade of concealer would be best for them. We are two different kinds of makeup purchasers with two different kinds of needs so I am glad the needs of the Professional artist are starting to be addressed. I missed that event this year, but if I’m not booked I will be there next year.
We arrived at about 10:30am on Sunday, the plan being to walk the floor and see what vendors had to offer, go to lunch and see what would happen from there. I get a lot of makeup sent to me via the editorials I do, so I really didn’t plan to buy much, I mostly wanted to look and see what was new, do some research, etc. The first booth we encountered when we entered the show was...(read the rest on makeuptogo blog)

The Haul...

I knew that I would only be able to spend one day at The Makeup Show as I had booked a job for Monday. I had gone through my kit and wrote down a list of the must haves that I needed to replenish and what new products I wanted to see and check out. So, basically, I came with a plan of attack.
I had already reunited with ALOT of my makeup artist friends that I had not seen in a while the night before and if it was anything like in years past, I knew that it was going to get packed, hot and crowded fairly quickly.

On my list I had:

1. lip brushes from Hakuhodo
2. an artist pack of Beauty Blender Sponges
3. 2 shade refills of my Graftobian HD foundation
4. Elegant Faces brush shampoo
5. Goe Oil
6. Embryolisse (I hoard it so I never run out...)
7. replenish 4 shades of Kevyn Aucoin foundation
8. Kevyn Aucion lash curlers

I had wanted to check out:
1. NARS even though I usually get supplied via their online service and they opened a store here in NY on Bleecker, I still wanted to see if they had anything new, fun & exciting debuting at the show

2. YSL. Nothing else needs to be said. It's YSL, I've been a long time fan and devotee of several items in this line and for reasons aformentioned in number 1, I wanted to see what the deal was there
3. Anything else that caught my eye that I deemed as necessary. Being a seasoned artist, I'm quite specific about what it is that I'm looking for and what I would consider purchasing, hence having a plan of attack to make a beeline for exactly what I needed...

I managed to get through and conquer everything on that list with the exception of No.2 as all of the artist packs were sold out by the time I got to a booth that was selling them and No.4 as the vendor wasn't at the show. It's been out of stock since forever so it brings me to wonder if they are even making this product anymore as its my favorite organic shampoo soap block with which to wash my brushes...This may pose potential problems, I should look into this further (note to self...)

Let's now go through the rest of that list in order, shall we?

-Number one on the list: check. I even picked up some other brushes from them. I've been using Hakuhodo brushes for MANY years and I'm happy that I can count on them being there. Honestly, they are one of the main reasons that I even bother to go to the show. Since I'm based in NY, I have access to nearly all of the other brands at this show except for them so that's why they are my number one draw. I really only needed to get some newer lipbrushes, (as I wanted some with covers) but I ended up buying about 5 new eyeshadow brushes in varying shapes and sizes as well.  Seemingly, I can never leave that booth without spending less than a few hundred dollars. The staff and I are on a first name basis so we both get happy each time we see each other.

-Number two sadly was already addressed so I will have to get in contact with the Beauty Blender people and rectify that situation STAT. I don't always use sponges, but when I do, 90% of the time, its a beauty blender.

-Number three: I didn't end up getting the HD refill as I forgot to write down which shade I needed; I mistakenly just wrote down the palette. However upon perusal of their booth, I was delighted to come across their new Super Palettes:

Graftobian High Def Glamour Creme Foundation Super Palettes in Super cool (left) & Super warm (right)

Let's discuss for a moment why these make me happy. Firstly I love the Graftobian High Def Glamour Creme foundations. I found them when I initially started upon the journey to find something that closely approximated the old Shu Uemura Nobara foundaion. It's no secret that I love cream foundation and tend to use it a majority of the time.  I like their coverage, their performance and their color selection is thorough and its perfect for hi-def. I also like the fact that they make one of the best dark skin foundation palettes that I've seen in a looong time.  I'm also a big palette fan as ANY time I can condense something to take up less space in my kit, than I do so. I like how they have 18 shades in each of the palettes as they used to only be available in the 5 well palette. So, Yay for having every color you could possibly need and for having it in such a portable handy dandy, at-the-ready, thin palette (with a mirror).

Since the booth was sharing the aisle with Make Up For Ever, it was pretty mobbed and I was only able to get a snapshot of 2 of the 3 foundation palettes. Shown above is the Super cool palette on the left and the Super palette warm on the right. It's also available in a third option: Super palette neutral. I'll be picking up one of each of these to put into my other makeup kit...

-Number four: Elegant Faces Brush Shampoo

Bueller? Bueller? Frye??....Frye? If anyone has seen this can you please let me know. I feel like its becoming one of those Where's Waldo moments as I've been searching for it for at least a year. Please see the aforementioned intro paragraph if your conused to what I'm referring to here...

-Number five: Goe Oil

Check...I discovered Goe Oil last year when I went to replenish my hand refresher. (Yes, that Jao, the amazing hand refresher people) In addition to the products, I love the principal and the philosophy behind the entire Jao Brands line: (small, family owned & operated, passion and research are put into each product, they smell delicious etc...) I also get a ton of compliments any time someone gets a whiff of my hands when I'm doing their makeup. Couple that with the fact that I love the smell of lavender and well, you have what initially made me fall in love with Jao's hand refresher about 9 years ago but I'm sidetracking. I apologize. I have a thing for body sheens, balms, creams, highligthers, lotions, oils, potions, gleams and the etcetera. I'll try anything on my quest to find the perfect body product. Goe Oil was the personification of my 'unicorn'. It's super moisturizing (it delivers the moisture of a body butter or a balm but its not heavy) and last longer than just a regular lotion. It's packaged in a tube so that should give you an idea of its consistency. Sometimes on the body, when I'm not using it as a basic moisturizer I use it as I would a highlighter; just on the 'high' spots, down the center of the shin, on the shoulders (you get the idea). It imparts a well moisturized and lightly oiled or sheened look without the mess of say, baby oil (stylists won't kill you) and its not in the least bit greasy. it leaves your skin super soft plus it smells like heaven. AND you can use it in your hair, or on your cuticles, it's not just for faces but also can be used on spare place's (sorry, I was getting all Dr. Seuss-y)....

Jao Brands
So as Gale & Wendy were wrapping my Goe Oil, I poked around their booth a bit more and discovered that they've launched outdoor products as in natural plant based bug repellants. Firstly I think the name Patio Oil (I swear their products have such cool names) is pretty genius. Secondly, I love the packaging and the logo of this stuff (Something about it reminds me of summer in the 70's but yet it's super modern:
Patio Oil Moisture Mist (left) & Outscent perfume (right) on display

Gale seemingly took great care in creating these to be effective, good for the skin (as in moisturizing & 100% natural) while not smelling like bug repellant (to me it smells like 'fruity earth' meaning lemony & fruity but also earthy/woody and comforting). Natural Oils (it contains hemp, jojoba and lemon eucalyptus) are good natural repellants and when you spritz it on you get a nice cooling sensation (kind of like a peppermint patty) on your skin. And since its not at all harsh, it can be applied and re-applied as needed.

Outscent is sort of Patio Oils friend (you can layer it) and yet another multiple use product all in itself. As another side, I love that nearly everything at Jao Brands can be used in a number of ways. As a pro, it helps me to cut down on the amount of product that I carry. Its also less wasteful. But oh yeah, back to Outscent. It's actually a lightweight essential oil perfume that you can spray on your skin or on your clothes year round. Naturally in the warmer months it will also help to repel those annoying bugs just by default of its ingredient content but its I also imagine it to be pretty cool spritzed on a sachet hidden in between sweaters in a drawer in the cooler months...If your an essential oils wearer or a patchouli lover Outscent is going to be right up your alley.

-Number sixEmbroylisse:
I've been the Lait Creme Concentrate since the days when one had to smuggle it back from Paris. Thankfully, its now also available stateside, (although sometimes I miss the smuggling back from Paris part, the 'score') It's one of the best moisturizers and one of 3 that I carry in my kit. I used it on all skin types on 90% of my jobs and have never had an issue. I love the texture of this stuff, and the slip and the way that it feels on the skin is so yummy...

-Number seven & eight Kevyn Aucoin Beauty

Let me preface this by saying that ANY brand that has won this many editors choice awards is major. I was a huge fan of the man but I'm also a huge fan of the makeup. I Love, Love, LOVE this line. I fell in love with back when it launched and they only had a few sku's. I've used their foundations both the Sensual Skin Enhancers & the Radiant Reflections since their inception. As one of the best artists in the world, its no wonder he created one of the most amazing foundations (IF you know how to use it and what to do with it) There is a bit of a learning curve to them, but once you experiment and find the way that they work best for you, you too will be hooked.  Gee, how funny, yet another cream product (see I told you).
Sensual Skin Enhancer

I picked up only 2 shades of the Skin Enhancers as I already had several of the 16 available shades. I don't need every shade but have the essential ones as I tend to blend them together...

Radian Reflection Foundation
The Radiant Reflection foundation (stick) is flawless in its 6 tone color range (perfect yellow based neutrals) and much sheerer than the Skin Enhancers that are Full coverage. And when I say full, I mean FULL. And they're all named after Supermodels, how cool is that? I didn't pick any up at the show as I had just gotten 4 of them in the mail the prior week.   I do find that especially with the Radiant Reflection foundation, a key to its success in using it is with a damp sponge/ beauty blender. I find it doesn't respond well to fingers or even dry sponges. You will pretty much just end up dragging it around the face, especially if you are dry or have texture disturbances. It feels cool going on as it contains quite a bit of water and the products sets on the dry down once the water evaporates, hence, working quickly is a must...

It was also imperative that I pick up several of their lash curlers. Yes (I hear you asking now, it's definitely comparable to the Shu Uemura lash curler AND the lash pad is red not just because it looks cool but also so that those of you with difficulty or hesitation in curling your lashes can actually see them before you press down on them...
Kevyn Aucoin Lash Curler

So, Kevyn Aucoin, check, check...and check...

Now, lets address the second list going one by one, the 'Stuff I want to check out' or the 'anything that catches my eye'  portion:

Sheila over at Kett Cosmetics introduced these great little plastic zip bags. It can hold their airbrush foundations or you can use them for whatever products or sundries that you would like.  The plastic is definitely heavier & more durable than the ones that are mainly available and the zipper is super sturdy. I need to be able to see everything in my kit. It helps with organization as I organize everything by type and I'm able to put my hand on it in an instant. I also need everything to stand up on its own inside of the bags so its not just one mass jumble of product.

They come in 3 different sizes and have that lovely and super convenient 'dopp kit' handle on the side.
I came home and immediately found uses for them: One of the bags, I filled with my collection of Lip Tars:
See how they all stand up on their own and there's no excess/ unnecessary space? I love that...

The other one which is actually the same length as the as the one I filled with the lip tars but is slightly taller, I filled with my selection of mini tarte cheek stains and NARS multiples:

The small baby one is the perfect size to fill with Q-tips, various sized cotton swabs and those pre-soaked, indivuality packaged makeup remover cotton swabs. It's also the perfect size to hold your lash curlers, tweezer & tweezer pouches and lash adhesives.
Good job on the bags, Sheila!!

YSL

Yves Saint Laurent made their debut at the NY Makeup show this year. I was uber excited to see that they were going to be a vendor as I mainly use either pro brands or luxury brands in my kit. Not counting my brief love affair with their fragrance Opium in the late 80's when powerful scents like that were the cool thing to do even if you were only 16 years old, I've been a fan of theirs since I started using their Touche Eclat in the late 90's. Since that time, I've grown to love more and more of line:

Love their Volume Effet Faux Cils (its my favorite volumizing luxury brand mascara). I tend to go for volume over length and this mascara and I have a had a long standing love affair: Great brush, great formula in the tube, not too wet, not too dry, easy to apply and dries without leaving a dull or flat finish.  In my opinion, they also make the best shade of violet mascara. I also love their Rouge Volupte lipsticks. I use them quite frequently in editorials as the pigments, texture & payoff are really top notch. They also have an amazing selection of neutrals in varying shades.

YSL came with their entire product line and a beautiful chic setup consistent with their luxury branding and thankfully I got there early enough to have some play time with their newest color offerings. They previewed the summer collection of 2 of their Pure Chromatics Wet/Dry eyeshadows: palettes No.19 (shimmery rose neutrals) and No.20 (shimmery gold neutrals). Of course these shadows can be used dry for a sheer wash of color but when you wet them the pay off is taken to a whole different level...

 YSL Pure Chromatics Palette No.19
YSL Pure Chromatics Palette No. 2

They contain 70% mother of pearl and color pigments and the rest is water. During the manufacturing process, the pans are filled from the bottom with water and when the water is removed the block of color is left. It applies opaque and dries quickly enhancing both the shimmer and mother of pearl pigment particles. If you don't like a full commitment to shimmer it also blends down and softens  beautifully leaving behind a sheer veil of color...

They also carry one of my favorite waterproof eye pencils. The texture of it is not like many of the typical waterproof eye pencils that to me, always have a sense of 'plastic encasement' to them and it takes them a few passes to make them opaque. This one is softer, more like an eye kohl or Craypas: super creamy and opaque upon the first pass. I tested the absinthe green shade and its the perfect cross between a mint green and a pastel green with a turquoise undertone:

YSL Waterproof eyepencil

Quick effective eye makeup removal without irritation or a greasy residue is best so I cant finish this post without recommending the YSL  eye makeup remover,  one of the best:

Its dual phase which is my preference for both personal and professional use as it cuts through and removes even the toughest and stubborn eye makeup. It's also non irritating and works great on removal of heavily pigmented lip products...

Moseying on down the aisle to OCC we find that they've launched OCC Tint:

A long time ago, MAC used to make a product called E-PT which was an amazing pre-cursor to tinted moisturizer. It was discontinued more than 10 years ago and I've yet to find something to replace it...until now. OCC Tint is the closest thing that I have found to it, but its way cooler and far more advanced than anything from 10 years ago. If EPT had aged and gone to a retirement home, this perhaps would be what it matured into. Falling in line with the OCC skin philosophy which is also my philosophy (skin should look like real skin) OCC Tint personifies this perfectly!  It's sheer and beautiful, moisturizing & soft and it disappears flawlessly and invisibly into the skin.
As we've come to expect from OCC, its perfect for pro usage but also the everyday makeup wearer and the selection of 12 shades are spot on:

OCC Tint in shades Y0 through Y5 (left to right)

Rounding out the foundations are new offerings from Viseart, professional makeup Paris.  With the exception of an older generation of the pro artist community (by older I mean those of us who have been doing makeup professinally for at least 10+ years) I don't think alot of people at large are familiar with Viseart. They wouldn't be; its a line thats mainly for professionals and carried only in pro or makeup specialty shops. Vieseart are the great people from Paris that brought us the STAPLE pro brand neutral eyeshadow kit seen here:
Viseart eyeshadow palette
Anyway, Viseart has added onto their brand by launching an entire set of brand new HD Matte foundation compacts:

Viseart HD Cream Foundation Compacts

Viseart HD Foundation Powders

(Sorry for the heavy shadow in the second picture. People started to crowd around and come over when they heard me talking about how fabulous this stuff is...)

Offered in both cream and powder formulation options they're both oil & silicone free and the 'true to skin shades' blend flawlessly, disappearing into the skin leaving behind a seamless & smooth, sheer natural matte finish. Easily buildable and blendable and the compacts are flat to boot??  I think that its a matter of time before these 2 new additions to the Viseart line become addictions.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! I made it in and out of the show in about 4 hours. Undoubtedly I would have moved quicker had it not gotten so hot and crowded so fast but I was thankful that my pre-planning was effective as I saw everything that I had set out to and then some...I was able to come home and filter my new stuff into my kit an activity that upon completion gives such a sense of contentment and satisfaction; I imagine it as the feeling akin to finally getting a newborn to fall asleep after a 3 hour crying spell...Now to enjoy the rest of my evening with a glass of wine...

White-Out

When I was in 5th grade and bored in class, I used to paint my nails with White Out, or ahem, at that time, I think it was called Liquid Paper.  I liked the opacity but the finish of it sucked and my 'manicure' never lasted more than 5 seconds...Mike Potter must have painted his nails with white out too as he's the mastermind makeup artist genius behind KO Knockout Cosmetics.

I first met Mike and worked with him years ago backstage when he was keying the Rick Owens show. If my memory serves me correctly, this may have even been before he created and designed the hair and makeup for both the stage and movie versions of Hedwig & The Angry Inch. In addition to being a dope makeup artist, he has launched a line of 'flatte' nail polishes that go on opaque and have a matte 'flatte' or no-shine finish. I am LOVING these and am all over them. I can now permanently put the White Out away and stop omitting top coats from my mani's and pedi's in an attempt to get the same effect. As a makeup artist, I'm a purist, meaning the pure-er the color, the better and the no shine finishes on these lacquers really allow for the purity of the pigments and the beauty of the color to be shown off without all of that glossy topcoat hoopla...

I love the actual product but I'm also loving the design and feel of the bottle in my hand too!!! The bottle design sports a sort of victorian art deco feel and has a handle that is longer than most that feels really comfortable in your hand .  The bristles on the brush have a nice bounce and spread to them to allow the color to be applied evenly and effortlessly with just one coat. Leave flatte if you so desire or buff your nails into a satiny finish. Seriously, this nail lacquer is the business folks. Kudos Mike, Kudos...

Tar Babies!!!!!!

I got home today and was thinking about how there are so many things in my makeup pot that are brewing and that I feel are blog-able, but cannot at this time due to various reasons or another. Just as I was thinking about writing an apology entry, I had my attention diverted by a package that my postman left for moi.....(drumroll enter here: ___....) my OCC Lip Tars finally arrived!!!!

My OCC Liptars in the 'Shwag Bag'...still in the shipping box

My friend David is the genius behind Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics and these fabulous Lip Tars! As with the rest of the OCC makeup line, their promise to "commit to innovation both in color and texture as well as concept and selection" holds true with these newest additions. Lip Tars combine the longevity of lipstick with the ease and application of a gloss. Super glossy, super saturated in color, long wearing and drying down to a moisturizing satiny finish. Yum. And, not only do they come in a variety of colors that remind me of Skittles, but they come with super cool names like: Grandma and Feathered! Yum again!

As a makeup artist, I've nearly seen it all, as far as products are concerned, so its extra nice when something like this comes along and since I've been doing makeup for a long time, it's rare that I add 'new' things to my permanent kit (restock and replace yes; the addition of an entirely new product lineup, usually no), but, these have made the exception cut. Into the kit they go! Thanks David for creating Lip Tars to make me swoon, and to play with, and to create pretty pictures with, but also for reminding me that I've not seen ALL that all has to offer!

The OCC Lip Tar lineup

OCC Lip Tars as well as the rest of the fabulous OCC makeup collection are available online at www.occmakeup.com

4 Things I'm Loving right now...

...and what you should probably start loving too...

I'm loving the products below, and decided to share them with you by giving them some blog love.

1.) Diopticalm Anti Fatigue soothing Balm for the eyelids: Courtesy of our friends at Lierac. Models oftentimes have very sensitive eyes. They also remove their makeup more times in a day then the average person. This soothing and calming eye balm is the perfect product. Its smooth thin texture does not interfere with makeup application and it is fast to absorb. It hydrates and calms at the same time and can also be applied and left to sit on the skin sort of like an eyemask. I love all of the eyecreams from Lierac, but this one I find is the one that I use the most, especially when I am backstage at shows. Something else to note is the small convenient size, perfect for not taking up too much room in my kit....

2.) Vincent Longo Hydro Sticks...I'm actually a bit late on my love affair here as I've been using other highlighting sheen type products and have recently fallen in love with these even more since I've started using them on myself... What I like about them, and what I feel gives them the edge over other products in this same category is that they actually stay put!!! Sheen products can have the tendency to slip and slide, especially when they are in stick form (as vs. powder). Since these contain water, they last longer. Let moi explain: when the water evaporates upon application it leaves behind only the sheen and color. As it edges closer and closer (me hopes) to the warmer weather months, I fall in love all over again with products like these as their staying power is amazing. Put it on, build it to the consistency you want and forget it. I'm all smiles about that!

3.) Skindinavia Stage & Set Makeup Finish (pro only) and Mineral Makeup Finish: I've discussed my admiration and appreciation for Skindinavia before. These 2 makeup finishing sprays are brand new to the Skindinavia lineup. So new in fact, that they are still not widely available. The folks over at Skindinavia always seem to have the perfect blend of science, technology and overall product performance combined with the needs of makeup artists down pat. Both products set the makeup, improve overall long term wearability, and even help to cut down on the amount of times that the makeup needs to be touched up. The finishes are further broken down by speciality: one for the demands of HD (pro-only), the other, for mineral makeup which is all the rage right now. Since the mineral makeup finish is more consumer friendly and more widely available, note that it is designed to be used both as a primer and a finisher. It's formula includes a proprietary blend of six hydrating moisturizers to counteract dryness and control that excessive powdery appearance. Its unique pigment dispersion system acts like an airbrush to blend colors naturally and eliminate smudging and flaking (a must for those of you who use mineral makeup). Both of these products have been tried and tested by moi and trust: They do not disappoint. I've used them numerous times since I've gotten them, most recently on a job where I was booked half day and the makeup needed to hold up until the end of the day, long after I was gone.

4.) Boots Original Formula Cuticle Oil in Rose: Boots has launched this updated classic formula for its 16oth anniversary. This nail oil is smoothing and conditioning as it contains rose and jojoba oils. It's lightweight, sinks in quickly and keeps my cuticles (which can become raggedy within a few hours if left unattended) in check. I also like the eyedropper delivery system. Since I work with my hands, I usually avoid manicures as they just aren't very practical unless I have a few days off in a row. I find that this stuff truly keeps my fingertips, nails and cuticles in check and looking polished (no pun intended, or perhaps maybe???) That's important since my hands are usually always snapped in photos. I also find the rose scent delicious, as is the apothecary vintage inspired packaging.

Enjoy!

Inkblots at my tips

You know they do one at least every season. And, sadly, some of you sit on the side and wait until it's to late to get yours. You will only have yourselves to blame this time if you let it happen again. (It's not happening to me, as I own two.) 'Vendetta' nail polish is poised to be the NEW cult nail enamel color of this upcoming season. Launched as a limited edition offering with Chanel's new S/S 09 makeup collection, it's a super opaque and super dark combination of slightly metallic black, navy and purple with the smallest hint of multicolored pink and blue micro-glitter. It actually reads more metallic when far away, and the glitter only shows in natural light, but hey, I'm a makeup artist, I scrutinize color down to the finest detail. This color reminds me of a rorschach inkblot or an old school felt tipped pen whose color wavers somewhere between dark navy, black and purple all at the same time!

Personally, I think its kind of nice to have this juxtaposition of such a dark nail enamel being offered with a spring color collection. This color goes with any skin tone as well, from the lightest of the light, to the darkest of the dark. Ladies and Gentlemen, (yes, this color looks great on trendy boys too), keep those nails short and groomed (I'd recommend a professional manicure) and remember to remove at the FIRST signs of "chipp-age..."

Trial-Sized Treasure Trove....

One of these days, (hopefully in the very near future) I will post a picture of my kit. I've always been extremely baffled by artists that carry kits the size of military sea bags. Living and working primarily in NY, and being a heavy public transportation taker (quicker and effective way to get around), a makeup kit the size of a small boating craft, is NOT an option for me. My kit has to be small, concise, precise and on wheels. I've heard from newer artists and various assistants just starting out, that they have the hardest time pairing the sizes of their kits down. It's a skill that is developed over a period of time coupled with having both experience and confidence. Having every product that one could possibly need packed inside of 18" is no easy feat, but I've managed to do it successfully for almost the past ten years.

One tip I will share here is pair down on the size of products that you put in your kit. Anything that you can find in miniature or pack in a smaller quantity, do so. If your kit is not going away with you to some far and away place for an extended stay, then there is no need to carry full sizes of certain types of products.

Today, I stumbled across some products that will definitely help to maintain my 'light' load, if not lighten it further. The first would be a mini nail kit even more, mini. (Sidetrack with me for a second: I carry a small nail kit with basic necessities to not only remove nail enamel, but that also includes: cuticle oil, emory boards, orange sticks, and a variety of basic nail colors.) Enter in: the Seche Vite mini travel kit. Seche Vite is one of my favorite topcoats as it quick dries to a high shine glossy finish and the brush has nice bounce and nail coverage. The kit comes with a mini (.15ml.) Dry Fast Top Coat, Crystal Clear Basecoat, Seche Rose Nail Lacquer and a double sided heavy duty nail file. I lucked out in finding mine at ULTA for $4.99 (a steal)

I also picked up 1 fl.oz miniature sizes of Skindinavia's Makeup Setting Spray, Makeup Saving Moisturizing Spray and a full size .5 fl.oz.Face & Eye Makeup Primer. Apparently, they were on massive clearance ranging in price from .99 to $5.00 (I think they are liquidating the current inventory as perhaps they won't be stocking it in the future) BTW, don't sleep on Skindinavia. Their primer is my favorite; in my opinion, even better than the Smashbox Photofinish. I don't use primer often, but when I do, I reach for theirs. Their various makeup sprays, are not be underestimated either. In fact: "SkindinƤvia treatments are formulated to last a very long time. They have a time released delivery system that encapsulates millions of tiny nano-spheres barely wider than a ray of light. As each layer of spheres releases their contents, the next layer begins working. Clinical trials show SkindinƤvia treatments last exponentially longer than standard products." I couldn't have said it better myself...actually I didn't, those are words are straight from the horses mouth, ahem, I mean the Skindinavia website. So boys and girls, the lesson of the day is: small, lilipution, miniature, trial sized, tiny, itsy bitsy, teeny weeny. You guys get the idea. Smaller in this case, is definitely better. Enjoy lightening your loads!

xx!

Staying power re-defined....

I've been waiting several months to discuss this as I wanted to put it through my own trials. Jemma Kidd's I-Tech liquid eyeliner for Target is AMAZING!!!! (Not to be confused with her higher end that is sold exclusively in the states at Neiman's). The colors are intense and true, the brush is super tight and has just the right amount of bounce and it dries quickly (only those with adept hands need apply figuratively and literally). It also stays PUT once it dries, so again, make sure you have a crisp clean line with no mistakes as it's not coming off. It survived my 8 hours straight of dancing at a Body & Soul house music party looking just as fresh and pristine at the end, as it did when I applied it 11 hours before....Needless to say, this eyeliner has found its way into my kit, as well as into my personal makeup bag.

An eyeliner this heavy duty definitely requires a no joke remover. My recommendations would be: Shu Uemura cleansing oil (or any oil based cleanser), or, if you are the type of person who has to use an eye makeup remover, make it a dual phase like Bifacil from Lancome or Precision by Chanel 'cause makeup wipes, are not gonna cut it.

Stumbling blocks...

..SO I stumbled upon these amazing blushes....I'm not really a person who constantly shops for makeup items for my kit at this point in my career, but, I do like making new discoveries, staying ahead of the product curve and discovering 'new' cosmetic finds...

Enter in: American Beauty

My first experience with American Beauty and FLIRT! was about 2 seasons ago backstage at the J-Lo Sweetface show. I walked out not only exhausted as it was my last show for the week but accompanying me was a fat goodie bag filled to the brim of their products. I was slightly impressed. Since then, in doing a bit more research on them, I've become more than slightly impressed. They only retail at Kohl's, and the pigment in some of the products, is pretty top notch. Long story short, after returning a set of cookware that I got as a gift, I mosey-d over to the cosmetics section (as I always do whenever there is anything remotely health and beauty related) , and stumbled upon a new kit item:
American Beauty Beloved Rose Powder Blush....

The abridged version:

WYSIWIG color(codespeak for what you see is what you get), highly pigmented, shades for all skin tones, finely milled and silky to the touch. It can definitely sit side by side with the pro brands in my kit and hold its own. This collection of shimmer blushes have the right amount of both pigment and sheen....
